At the heart of our business lies a passion for creating timeless outdoor furniture that blends naturally into any garden or countryside setting. Our journey began when Ed, fresh out of university, was asked to redesign the grounds of a traditional farm, transforming it into a welcoming holiday retreat. Part of this project involved crafting a cleft sweet chestnut garden gate and benches that would complement the rural character and rustic charm of the old farmstead.
Working alongside his father, Dave, the first pieces of bespoke outdoor furniture came to life. Using windfallen sweet chestnut wood, Dave hand-crafted cleft garden gates and wooden benches that celebrated the natural character of the timber. The result here is a garden gate that perfectly compliments the thatched roof and weathered flint walls of the ancient buildings, creating an entrance that feels truly in harmony with its surroundings.
The craftsmanship went beyond function. The large, hand-finished chestnut posts gave the gate a strong, grounded presence, while the natural curves of the wood added individuality to each piece. Simple off-the-shelf latches and hinges were used, but over time, the process has evolved. Today, we collaborate with a skilled local blacksmith who hand-forges bespoke hinges and latches to match the organic form of every rustic gate. This partnership ensures each gate is not only practical but also a unique work of art, shaped by traditional skills and attention to detail.
