We were recently asked to recreate a beautiful cleft chestnut garden gate that had originally been handmade by another craftsman several years earlier. The clients loved the rustic design but were unable to contact the original maker, so they approached us to take on the project. As it was a local commission in the heart of Dorset, Alex was able to visit the site one evening to carefully study the existing gate and its surroundings.
The original design featured a striking length of split chestnut, cleverly used as both a structural diagonal brace and the handle for opening the gate. While the gate had plenty of character, the off-the-shelf galvanised hinges didn’t quite suit the handmade charm of the timber.
Taking inspiration from the original, Alex worked with Mark in the workshop to build a new cleft chestnut garden gate that captured the same organic beauty while adding greater strength and longevity. Using traditional mortice and tenon joints, the new design honoured time-tested woodworking techniques, ensuring the finished piece would endure for many years to come.
To elevate the design further, bespoke hinges were shaped to follow the natural curves of the cleft chestnut, blending seamlessly with the rustic lines of the wood. This attention to detail, combined with the natural durability of chestnut, resulted in a gate that not only echoed the charm of the original but also reflected the craftsmanship and care that goes into every project we take on.
